04/04/2008 (Agence Europe) - A delegation from the civil liberties committee at the European Parliament travelled to Poland on 1-4 April to visit two detention centres for immigrants and asylum seekers. The MEPs comment that while more work is needed to ensure acceptable living conditions and legal aid for detainees, Poland is in a good position compared with other EU member states. The head of the delegation, Patrick Gaubert (EPP-ED, France), said the MEPs were reassured by the authorities' desire to collaborate and answer all questions, even technical and ethical ones. He did, however, note several problems with the management of the centres - asylum seekers' problems in accessing legal aid and no aid being provided for immigrants kept as part of the 'tolerated stay' system. After visiting detention centres in Italy, Spain, France, Malta, Greece, Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Poland, the MEPs will be visiting Denmark on 10 April 2008 and Cyprus in May 2008.
