According to an internal report by the BaFin (Bundesbank and the German Financial Supervisory Authority), the global financial crisis may have cost the banks and other financial institutions in the world up to $600bn. The most likely scenario would appear to be around $430bn. The authority has calculated that the banks have already admitted losses of around $295bn. (I.L.)
