Brussels, 28/03/2008 (Agence Europe) - US Republican presidential candidate, John McCain, would like to see a free trade agreement (FTA) between the countries of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the EU member states. “I am an unashamed and unabashed defender of NAFTA. I am an unabashed supporter of free trade agreements. In fact, it would be interesting … to have a free trade agreement between ourselves and the European Union,” he said in a speech to the World Affairs Council on 27 March. “(EU countries) are one of the largest economic blocs in the world, if not the largest,” he went on, making clear his desire to break with the unilateralism of the Bush administration.
