Brussels, 27/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - Louis Michel, Development and Humanitarian Aid Commissioner, took part in an “enlarged political committee” in Chad on 27 February with a view to reactivating the democratic process in this country. Those invited to the meeting included the main international negotiators, representatives of the civil society as well as representatives of the presidential majority and of the opposition members of the follow-up and support committee for the political agreement of 13 August. Before leaving for N'djamena, the Commissioner said recent events have shown how urgent it is to restore trust between the political actors and the nation's lifeblood. He said the attempted coup by rebel movements and the ensuing period of instability cannot and must not distract the government and the opposition parties from their commitments. The Commissioner remains convinced that sustainable stability in Chad requires political openness to all its internal components. Louis Michel was also to accompany French President Nicolas Sarkozy who is stopping off in Chad to meet President Idriss Déby. (A.N.)
