EU sanctions authorities from island of Anjouan

Brussels, 27/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 27 February, the Committee of Permanent Representatives from member states of the EU adopted a draft common Council position on freezing funds and economic resources belonging to Colonel Mohamed Bacar (the self-proclaimed president of the island of Anjouan) as well as those belonging to other members of his government. This draft is expected to be approved by the EU27 during the next Council. The European approach follows a request made to the EU from the African Union (AU), whose Peace and Security Council adopted sanctions against the “illegal” regime of Mohamed Bacar. Sanctions have not yet brought him down. Re-elected president of Anjouan on 10 June 2007, following elections that have been rejected by the AU and the Union of the Comores, which is in fact a federal state, Mr Bacar is refusing to organise new elections.
