Strasbourg, 19/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - “One might think that any other solution would have been better. But there is no solution other than that of recognising an independent Kosovo”, said Daniel Cohn-Bendit, member of the European Parliament Greens, speaking on Tuesday 19 February during a press conference. “Of course, the main problem is the question of minorities in the region”, he went on, saying, however that “Kosovo's independence should be seen as controlled independence”. “We are in favour of Kosovo's supervised independence and we are in favour of a resolution being adopted by the European Parliament” (Ed.: to which the EPP-ED and PES groups object), added Cohn-Bendit. In response to press questions about the EU distancing itself from the legal UN framework in the Kosovar issue, the president of the Greens Group said he was in favour of a vote at the UN General Assembly rather than at the Security Council to legalise Kosovo's independence. “If worldwide legality means Russian President Putin, then I am against a power of veto held by one of the five main powers at the Security Council”, he said, before going on to criticise the fact that the legal framework of the UN “loses its legitimacy due to the right of veto” of one of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
