18/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Monday evening, Oxfam regional Director Nick Roseveare gave his reactions to the conclusions adopted on Chad by EU Foreign Ministers (see related article). “Europe needs to back its words with real action. It is positive that foreign ministers have called for the fighting to stop and for talks to find a peaceful solution to the conflict. But ministers need to back up these fine promises with concerted diplomatic pressure to secure actual change for the people caught up in this conflict. Chad's beleaguered population deserves a future. Europe needs to learn the lessons of Darfur. We are at risk of having two 'peace-keeping forces' deployed on each side of the Chad/Darfur border, neither of which have a true peace to keep. Without a full cessation of hostilities, comprehensive peace processes and full international engagement, it looks unlikely that either force will be able to deliver the long-term peace and security that the Chadians and Darfuris deserve,” he wrote.
