Council, still concerned by violence, welcomes positive progress

Brussels, 18/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - Re-examining the situation in Kenya on 18 February, the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the EU voiced their deep concern at the persistence of violence, uncertainty and instability in Kenya, and reaffirmed that the Kenyan leaders must commit to bring these to an end as a matter of urgency. The conclusions of the Council are a message of encouragement to the process of dialogue begun under the aegis of Kofi Annan and seeking a legitimate political solution, without which the EU and its Member States would no longer be able to enjoy the same relations with Kenya as before. Among the positive progress, the Commission welcomes the agreement of the Kenyan parties immediately to take measures to put an end to the crisis, the intention voiced to bring in a committee for truth, justice and reconciliation, and the fact that an international investigation has been underway on violence perpetrated since the elections has been accepted by all parties. The Council calls on the Kenyan authorities to continue to cooperate with the United Nations High Commissioner for human rights and special adviser to the Secretary General of the United Nations for the prevention of genocide. It states that it will continue to monitor the situation carefully. (A.N.)
