13/02/2008 (Agence Europe) - The Committee of the Regions (CoR) adopted on 8 February in Brussels the opinion by the vice-president of the regional council of Upper Trentino Adige/South Tyrol, Mario Magnani (ALDE, Italy), on a European strategy for health problems linked to nutrition, overweight and obesity. It calls for commitment on the part of the regions and for children to receive education on a balanced diet from a very early age in order to reduce health problems due to obesity. The CoR: - underlines the need for international cooperation; - recommends organising an annual meeting between regions to promote the exchange of experience and to determine the most effective way to combat obesity; - and highlights the importance of collaboration with the agri-food industry as well as with the media.
