21/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 17 January, after a lively debate, the members of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) finally decided to postpone the vote on the exploratory opinion that they were to adopt on the energy mix in transport. Edgardo Maria Iozia, rapporteur, stressed that, with a view to the “post-oil” period, it was necessary to give preference to electrical means of transport, such as rail transport. He also recommended that research on second generation biofuels should be stepped up, as long as it does not conflict with human food or animal feed. The late submission of two amendments on one and the same article by Group II, on one hand, and by Peter Morgan, on the other, meant that the meeting felt it appropriate to defer examination of the text until the session on 13 and 14 February.
