Brussels, 21/01/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 22 January, European finance ministers will adopt conclusions on the revised strategy for the internal market (EUROPE 9547). They will describe the opening up of the services sector to competition as “crucial” and reach an agreement on efforts to “liberalise the network industries” (energy, telecommunications, postal services). In this connection they are expected to outline what steps should be taken, including further unbundling and balanced network access. The Ecofin Council will also support the initiatives announced by the Commission in the retail banking sector, notably the adoption by the banking sector of common rules on banking mobility. The Council will respect national competencies in taxation, and work towards improving how the internal market works through the fight against tax evasion and harmful taxation, as well as the fostering of cooperation between national tax authorities.
