THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/kenya

21/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - German Liberal MEP Graf Alexander Lambsdorf, who heads the EU's electoral mission in Kenya, has expressed concern about the level of violence in the country ahead of the presidential and general elections on 27 December: “We have noted with concern the level of violence that has taken place during the electoral process, particularly in Kuresoi and Mount Elgon,” said Lambsdorf in an interview with Reuters during a visit to Eldoret in north-west Kenya. According to a report published on 17 December by the Kenyan National Committee of Human Rights (KNCHR), at least 70 people have been killed since July 2007 in violence connected with the elections at hustings or so-called 'ethnic clashes' in the west of the country. Opposition presidential front-runner Raila Odinga is currently ahead of the current head of state, Mwai Kibaki, in the opinion polls. (A.B.)
