Brussels, 20/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - The United Nations Security Council discussion on the future of Kosovo showed the extent to which the positions of the Serbs and the Kosovars were irreconcilable. These differences were reflected in the positions of the United States and the main EU member states on the one hand and Russia on the other. Russia, whose stance is that any unilateral declaration of independence would be illegal under international law, still wants further negotiations on the autonomy of the province and wants to bring forward a new draft resolution. Attending the closed-door meeting of the 15-member Security Council along with Fatmir Sejdiu, Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica rejected the possibility of having Kosovo and Serbia as two independent states within the European Union. “This would open the way for several other similar demands for independence from minorities within member states of the EU, which is itself, like the UN, founded on the principle of respect for existing borders and the territorial integrity of states,” he told press after the meeting.
