Recovery of wrongfully spent money

Brussels, 20/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - No fewer than 17 EU member states will have to repay a total of €256.3 million in wrongly spent farm money as a result of a decision adopted by the European Commission on Thursday 20 December. The main corrections are: €183.9 million charged to Spain for shortcomings or lack of checks on crop declarations and yields, and also on monitoring the controls of mills in the olive oil production sector; €16.6 million charged to the region of Andalusia in Spain for weaknesses in on-the-spot checks (remote sensing and classical field visits) for area aids; €10.5 million charged to Italy for weaknesses in management and control of the quota system in the tobacco production scheme; and €9.7 million charged to the United Kingdom for late payments, mainly in the extension premium. The other countries involved are Belgium, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Sweden. (L.C.)
