Strasbourg, 17/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a joint resolution from the EPP-ED, PES, ALDE, UEN, Greens/EFA and GUE/NGL groups, adopted on Thursday 13 December, the European Parliament calls on Riyadh to take further steps aimed at lifting restrictions on women's rights, including women's free movement, the driving prohibition, employment opportunities for women, their legal personality and their representation in judicial processes, and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women in Saudi Arabia in public and private life. Parliament notes the recent announcements by the Saudi head of state, King Abdullah, that there will be judicial reform and the setting-up of new specialised courts and improved training for judges and lawyers, but MEPs continue to believe that a campaign is needed to promote awareness regarding violence against women in Saudi Arabia. The EP also urges Saudi authorities to revise national labour law with a view to ensuring that domestic workers have the same protection as that given to workers in other sectors, and to take legal action against employers responsible for sexual harassment or physical abuse and violation of labour law.
