17/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - As a sign of protest against the slipshod behaviour of member states regarding compliance with fisheries quotas, some two hundred activists from the Greenpeace movement blocked the entrance to the European Council and EU Council of Ministers in Brussels during the morning of Monday 17 December. The environmentalists set up barriers (covered in fishing nets), built a wall of breeze-blocks, waved banners calling for fishing to cease in Europe, and cried: “Closed until fish stocks are restored!”. The police rapidly dispersed the protestors and arrested Greenpeace activists. The fisheries ministers of the European Union member states will be beginning their talks on Total Allowable Catches (TACs) for 2008 on Tuesday 18 December. (L.C.)
