17/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has reacted with “understanding” to bombing raids carried out at the weekend by the Turkish army against installations of the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. “The EU understands the need for Turkey to protect its citizens” from terrorist attacks, the spokesperson to Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn stated on Monday. At the same time, the EU calls on Turkey not to use “disproportionate measures” and to respect human rights and the principles of the rule of law. The EU also urges Turkey to resolve the PKK problem via dialogue, the spokesperson continued. (H.B.)
