29/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Socialist Group at the European Parliament, the PES, is calling for the Roma question to be added to the European political agenda and is urging the European Commission to develop a trans-sectoral strategy in this connection. The vice-presidents of the PES, Dutch national Jan Marinus Wiersma and Austrian Hannes Swoboda, along with the head of the Romanian delegation, Adrian Severin, presented a series of priorities on 20 November ranging from the drafting of an EP report to the appointment of a European commissioner with special responsibility for coordinating policies focussed on the Roma. In March 2008, the PES will be holding a conference in Brussels on integrating the Roma. A delegation of Socialist MEPs will travel to Hungary and Romania on a fact-finding mission. The MEPs announced that the Socialist Group will be opening up its training programme to talented Roma workers. (B.C.)
