AEGEE students suggest new EU programme on multicultural citizenship

Brussels, 05/11/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Students' Forum (AEGEE) has officially proposed setting up an EU programme on 'multicultural citizenship'. In a press release, the AEGEE stresses the obvious need to have more people able to speak a foreign language, as highlighted by the EU multilingualism commissioner, Orban, at his meeting with AEGEE bureau members in July 2007 on the occasion of the 20th Summer University. At the meeting, the commissioner suggested that the students submit a language teaching programme to the European Commission. AEGEE-Europe President Theijs van Welij, said: 'In order to complement the current programmes, we propose setting up a new European Union programme on 'multicultural citizenship' to foster multilingualism and intercultural dialogue during the summer period.' 'We try to help other students and especially young Europeans to find an easy way to discover what they have: a place with peace, a place full of culture, a place where languages are an added value, not a problem,' added Laure Onidi, Project Director at AEGEE-Europe. AEGEE is now waiting for the European Commission feedback before continuing its work. (I.L.)
