Olli Rehn 'understands' Turkey's anti-PKK action but says it must respect international law

Brussels, 22/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner Olli Rehn (Enlargement), speaking through his spokesperson on Monday 22 October, slammed the recent PKK killings of Turkish soldiers and expressed 'solidarity' with Ankara in its fight against terrorism 'which is a common challenge for Turkey and the EU'. Asked about Turkey's planned armed intervention in the north of Iraq, the spokesperson repeated the Commission's views on the subject: 'The Commission understands Turkey's need to protect its citizens. Turkey and Iraq need to cooperate in the fight against terrorism coming from the north of Iraq in respect of international law. Last month's agreement between Turkey and Iraq on the fight against the PKK is positive and should facilitate cooperation.' The PKK is one of the groups on the EU list of terrorist organisations.
