New government will opt out of derogations from Charter of Fundamental Rights negotiated by Kaczynski

Brussels, 22/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, the president of the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee and the vice-chairman of the Civil Platform (PO), the political party in Poland that won Sunday's general elections, said on Monday 22 October that the new government, in all likelihood headed by Donald Tusk, will opt out of all the derogations from the Charter of Fundamental Rights negotiated by outgoing Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski. In a press release, Saryusz-Wolski said: 'The new Polish government will ratify the EU Reform Treaty as soon as possible, including the provisions regarding the Charter of Fundamental Rights'. One of Saryusz-Wolski's team told this newsletter that the Charter would fully apply to Poland and there would not be any Polish opt-out. This means that the United Kingdom will be the only EU member states where the Charter does not fully apply. Saryusz-Wolski announced that the new Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, will try to improve relations with all Poland's neighbours. (H.B.)
