New framework directive on motor vehicle type approval to take effect on 29 October

Brussels, 16/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - The new framework directive on type approval for motor vehicles and their trailers, and of systems, components and separate technical units intended for such vehicles was published in the EU Official Journal No L 263 of 9 October. The text, which will take effect on 29 October, replaces national legislation and extends the scope of the existing legislation (Directive 70/156 ECC modified in 1992) to all categories of vehicles other than tractors, quadcycles and tracked vehicles (the earlier directive restricted application to type approval of individual cars).

The aim of the legislation is to ensure that new vehicles on the market as well as the accessories and parts intended for them present a high degree of security and environmental protection. To this end, the directive establishes a whole series of provisions to be applied by the relevant national authorities for approval and homologation of each new vehicle. The same rules will be applicable to spare parts placed on the market which are likely to present a danger for security. The list of these “essential parts” should be drawn up according to a consultation process with interested parties, that is, before they are put up for sale. These “essential” parts will also be subject to control by the relevant authorities. (A.By.)
