Brussels, 04/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission decided on Wednesday 3 October to demand the repayment of a total of €145.2 million in agricultural money spent unduly. Italy is the country most affected by this decision, as it will have to repay €83.4 million (of which €76.4 million because of insufficient controls in olive oil production). France is close behind with €50.7 million to be repaid, €49.7 million of it for weaknesses in recognition criteria of organisations in the fruit and vegetable sector. Italy will also have to repay €6.2 million because of weaknesses in the controls of dry fodder production and Sweden will have to repay €3.7 million for insufficient area aid controls. Other Member States are also targeted by this account balancing exercise, but the sums involved are less substantial. (lc)
