Brussels, 04/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - In unanimously adopting the initiative report by Thierry Cornillet (ALDE, France), the Parliament development committee gave the conditional go-ahead, on 3 October, to the humanitarian consensus proposed by the Commission to increase the effectiveness of EU humanitarian policy. This consensus, which should be signed on 12 December by the Parliament, Council and Commission, should be “clearer and more precise”, the report stresses. The EU military civil protection capacities should be deployed in such a way as to complement and support the work of humanitarian organisations, and be limited to cases where they bring real added value. There should also be clarification of the relationship between the activities supported by the Commission via the stability instrument for the prevention, management and resolution of crises, and the concomitant activities of ECHO, the humanitarian aid service.
