01/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 28 September, the European Commission announced that it was to donate more than €50 million (to be channelled via the European humanitarian aid office, ECHO) to support refugees and displaced persons in eastern Chad and the north-east of the Central African Republic. This aid will contribute to the other measures taken by the UN and the EU to make these regions safe. €30.5 million will go to emergency humanitarian aid. €10 million, to be taken from the stability instrument, will go to train and equip 850 Chad police officers to be deployed in refugee camps in the eastern part of the country. In 2008, an additional €13 million from the ninth EDF will be spent on reconstruction. (oj)
