Brussels, 01/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission and the EU representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Miroslav Lajcak, are not entirely satisfied with the draft agreement signed on 28 September between Muslim and Serbian leaders from Bosnia, Haris Silajdzic and Milorad Dodik, on police reform. Consequently, the initialling and signing of the EU/Bosnia-Herzegovina Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) remains pending (technical negotiations are already concluded). On Monday, Commissioner Olli Rehn (enlargement) said: “it is possible that political leaders in BH have been discussing ways to OK police reform but the language in their agreement leaves many points unclear”. The Commission is therefore launching an appeal urging Bosnian leaders to send it clarification on several important points in the Silajdzic-Dodik agreement, which diverge from the Lajcak proposed compromise text (EUROPE 9499) as soon as possible. The EU is calling for a unified police force, funded out of a single and politically impartial budget. (hb)
