Brussels, 01/10/2007 (Agence Europe) - No major progress is anticipated from the second round of negotiations for a bilateral free-trade agreement between the EU and India, to be held in New Delhi from 1-4 October. Both the European and the Indian negotiators are expected to do no more than continue their preliminary discussions at technical level, which were started in Brussels last June (EUROPE 9457). When interrogated about the Doha Round, in particular since the United States has agreed to negotiate on the basis of the Falconer draft compromise on agricultural trade, New Delhi must above all clarify its position at multilateral level on the manufactured products (NAMA) and services planks. Given the commitment of all the members of the WTO to reach a compromise on agriculture and the NAMA by the end of October, India is unlikely to be in a position to devote itself wholeheartedly to its bilateral negotiations with the 27 ahead of the forthcoming EU-India summit, to be held on 30 November.
