Brussels, 25/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - Speaking through its spokesman's department, the European Commission said on Tuesday 25 September that it was “very concerned” by the tense situation in Burma. Despite warnings from the military regime that force could be used if the peaceful demonstrations continued, nearly 100,000 people, including several tens of thousands of Buddhist monks, continued to protest in the streets of Rangoon on Tuesday. The Commission has called upon the junta in power to show “maximum restraint”. MEPs are also concerned by the developments in the country and will examine the Burmese question when they meet in Strasbourg on Wednesday 26 September. Praising the courage of the Burmese monks, in striking contrast to the “apathy of the international community”, Geoffrey Van Orden (EPP-ED, UK) calls for a swift response. The EU has not answered the EP's call, the MEP deplores in a press release, trusting that the EU, USA and ASEAN countries will take concerted action as soon as possible to support the Burmese people. In a resolution adopted two weeks ago, the EP called on EU member states present at the UN Security Council to work towards a binding resolution concerning Myanmar (EUROPE 9497). (ab)
