Brussels, 14/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has decided not, for the moment, to retaliate against those countries which fail to respect the principle of visa reciprocity with regard to all EU member states. Currently, not all nationals of the EU member states can to travel to the United States, Canada or Australia without a visa. For example, the United States has amended its Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) legislation, but, in concrete terms, nothing has changed, the Commission says in a report to be presented to the JHA Council on Tuesday. The Commission is pressing Canada to make “tangible progress” by lifting the visa requirement for one or two member states by the end of the year. Australia has, however, been making efforts and it plans to include all member states in its entry without visas system (eVisitors system) by mid 2008. EUROPE will return to the detail of the report in its next edition. The next Commission report on visa reciprocity with third countries will be delivered on 30 June 2008. (bc)
