Italy found guilty of hampering freedom of establishment on gambling market

Luxembourg, 13/09/2007 (Agence Europe) - In the wake of the “Placania” and “Gambelli” affairs, the Court of Justice, ruling on Thursday 13 September, found Italy guilty of abusive practice on the betting market, this time for horse racing (case C-260/04). When the Italian authorities decided in 1999 to increase to 1000 the number of centres for betting on horses, they allowed the 329 licensees to simply renew their licenses, whereas new applicants had to submit tenders.
