THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/thailand

30/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - Thailand has coolly rejected the EU's offer to send observers to oversee the legislative elections on 23 December. Whilst the EU has suggested conducting a surveillance mission for this first legislative election since the military coup in 2006, the Bangkok authorities, brought to power by the military, have denounced what they see as an unacceptable affront to their national sovereignty. The Thai electoral commission has rejected the memorandum suggested by the EU to settle the framework of possible observer activity, giving the motive that this would give Europeans control of the elections. The head of the European Commission delegation is expected to meet the officials of the Thai electoral commission on 6 September. (ab)
