30/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - At the behest of the GUE-NGL and ALDE political groups, the president of the EP, Hans-Gert Pöttering, will be writing to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown about the case of Pegah Emambakhsh, who risks expulsion from Great Britain to Iran. If deported, Ms Emambakhsh, who is lesbian, risks physical violence and torture, and could lose her life. “Pöttering has the task of explaining to Gordon Brown that Pegah's expulsion to Iran would constitute a serious violation of human rights and international conventions and bring shame not only on a country like Great Britain but also on the European Union as a whole”, reads a press release from Italian MEP Giusto Catania, who represented the GUE/NGL during the EP Conference of Presidents on Thursday 30 August.
