Timothy Kirkhope calls for legislation on liquids to be reviewed

Brussels, 30/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - During the next plenary session on 3-6 September, when MEPs are to examine the draft resolution restricting liquids that passengers can carry on aircraft, the leader of the Conservatives at the European Parliament, Timothy Kirkhope (EPP-ED, Great Britain), called for the current legislation in this field to be reviewed and improved. “The current measures to restrict liquids that passengers can take on board flights may be working but, because they are implemented in different ways in different places, holiday-makers are all too often left feeling confused and unhappy”, he states in a press release published on Wednesday 29 August, before going on to call for improvements in the legislation and cooperation between the different member states.

The new rules in force took effect in November 2006 when the Commission adopted the regulation to restrict liquids carried on board aircraft by passengers to 100 ml. According to the EP transport committee, which has on several occasions set out the failings of such legislation (see EUROPE 9365), it would be preferable for the Commission to carry out regular reviews of regulations for the application of new air safety norms and to keep such regulations in place only after detailed examination of their effectiveness and cost (see EUROPE 9406).
