01/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - The possible partial opening-up of the German employment market to nationals of the countries of central and eastern Europe which are member states of the EU, as planned by Berlin (see EUROPE 9478), would have only a very limited impact on workers from Poland who, in the meantime, have become less keen on leaving their country, which is enjoying a time of full economic expansion, or on those who have already left for other destinations, stated a high-ranking civil servant in the Polish Ministry for Employment, as reported in the Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) of Wednesday 1 August. “If the German government had taken this decision three years ago, this would have had a major effect in Poland. But in the meantime, Polish emigration has been directed to other destinations”, the civil servant explained (our translation). (hb)
