Brussels, 01/08/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 31 July, EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana welcomed the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 1769 on deployment of the hybrid force (UNAMID) in Darfur. “I believe the most important result is that the resolution was finally approved last night”, said Mr Solana during a trip to Manila where he is attending ASEAN meetings. As part of the joint UN/African Union (AU) mission, 26,000 policemen and soldiers should be deployed in the Sudanese province of Darfur. They may use force for reasons of legitimate self defence, to ensure the free movement of humanitarian organisations and to protect civilians. “I believe this resolution with its last-minute changes is a good resolution”, Solana added. The last changes had been made to the text drawn up by France and the United Kingdom just before the vote. Supported by Beijing, Khartoum had hoped that the role of the hybrid force with regard to armaments would be limited to the surveillance of unlawful weapons and not involve either their seizure or their destruction.
