Brussels, 17/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - The Self-Defence Party (Samoobrona) of Andrzej Lepper, part of the Polish coalition government led by Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has decided to remain within the government and to form a new party with the League of Polish Families (LPR), another coalition member. The main aim of the new party is to scupper plans for the new EU treaty. “Our aim is the rejection of the European Union's future reform treaty”, the text of which is due to be finalised in the intergovernmental conference (IGC) by 19 October, said LPR leader and current Deputy Prime Minister of Poland Roman Giertych. The new grouping will take the name “League and Self-defence” (LIS). “The formation of this new party will give us the opportunity to block the commitments made by Poland to Brussels” during negotiations on the IGC negotiating mandate at the European Council in June, Mr Giertych said. He stated that the draft treaty would confirm “German domination of the rest of the European Union, and in particular Poland”. The new party is calling for the draft treaty to be put to a referendum in Poland, and not just voted on by the parliament, as President Lech Kaczynski wants. (hb)
