Brussels, 16/07/2007 (Agence Europe) - Following the repeal by New Delhi of local (or additional) taxes, which were applied in some Indian states, and were in addition to the national customs duties on imports of wines and spirits (see EUROPE 9463), the EU, on Monday, suspended its complaint to the WTO against the Indian import regime (see EUROP E9394 and 9414). While welcoming the Indian decision, which will allow European exporters to compete better, the Commission, nevertheless, regrets that the Indian government also raised national tariffs on wine from 100 to 150% - a rise that is authorised given the great difference between the maximum tariffs notified to the WTO (consolidated tariffs) and the tariffs applied by India. The WTO panel set up to investigate the European complaint may remain suspended for a year, during which time the Commission will continue to monitor the situation on the ground to ensure that there is no new discrimination at state level.
