Brussels, 29/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Commission sent Malta a Reasoned Opinion giving it two months to change its monopoly on the import, storage and sale of oil products. In line with the EU Accession Treaty, Malta had to ensure that oil products can be sold via a license system as from 1 January 2006 but according to information at the Commission's disposal, no commercial licences have yet been issued and Enemalta Corporation remains the only company allowed to import, store and provide oil wholesale for the domestic fuel market. Under Article 31 of the EC Treaty, member states must change their commercial national monopolies to ensure there is no discrimination against other member states in supply and market access criteria.
