Brussels, 26/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The EU Council General Secretariat is actively preparing a large international conference on weapons of mass destruction. It is scheduled for the end of October or early November (the date is not yet fixed), in Brussels. Contacts are underway to bring together senior representatives of a large number of countries. The initiative aims to be as inclusive as possible and should be attended not only by the EU but also the United States, Russia and the UN, China, India, Canada, Brazil, Pakistan and Egypt, to name just a few. The aim of the conference is to kindle dialogue on major issues relating to proliferation, including the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, the energy needs of developing countries, non-nuclear threats, and the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, etc. (oj)
