Brussels, 25/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, the EU gave its green light to the opening-up of two new chapters of accession negotiations with Ankara, but abstained over a third. The position of France, which had highlighted the difficulties relating to the “Economic and Monetary Union (EMU)” chapter (EUROPE 9445), thus prevailed at the meeting of EU ambassadors on Monday. The German Presidency proposed- and obtained- the opening-up with Turkey of chapters relating to statistics and financial controls, and the chapter on EMU will not feature on the agenda. Six new chapters, on the other hand, will be opened with Croatia: right of establishment, company law, financial services, information society and media, statistics and financial controls. Talks on all of these chapters will be officially opened at the accession conferences to be held at ministerial level, which will take place with both candidate countries this Tuesday 26 June. (ab)
