Brussels, 25/06/2007 (Agence Europe) - The threat of terrorist attacks “concerns the whole of Europe”, said the European commissioner for security, Franco Frattini, speaking in Rome on 22 June. Last week, the German authorities recommended increased vigilance against any possible terrorist attacks, pointing out that threats similar to those which preceded the attacks of 11 September 2001 in the United States had resurfaced. On this issue, the federal minister for the interior, Wolfgang Schäuble, went so far as to stress that the threat was “serious” and that suicide attacks were possible on German soil. “We have noted an increase in the movements of people who are prepared to carry out terrorist attacks, who trained in the hard-to-access areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan”, Commissioner Frattini explained, for his part. This is why Germany's concern “is also my concern”, he added, according to Ansa. “We have agreed not to drop our guard this summer and therefore to ensure permanent surveillance of all possible terrorist movements: the police forces and security services of all European countries are on the alert”, he announced.
