Brussels, 25/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, the EU high representative for the CFSP, said on Thursday that the Palestinian unity government composed of Fatah and Hamas was not working and that the EU was ready to envisage deployment of a peace force in the region. After meeting the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, Solana said he did not know whether the national unity government had definitively failed but that “it is a government that is not working”. “It is important for a government to manage the situation in Gaza, this government or another”, as the current situation is untenable, he said. He went on to say that the idea of a peace force was “one of the proposals” that the EU would be willing to look at if it came from the various parties involved in the conflict. (hb)
