EU, in consternation at humanitarian situation, to step up its emergency aid - Repeated calls for inclusive political dialogue

Brussels, 14/05/2007 (Agence Europe) - In Brussels on 14 May, the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the EU reiterated their concerns at the situation in Somalia, and spoke of their “consternation” at the humanitarian situation in Mogadishu and other southern and central regions of the country. In its conclusions, the Council calls on the Somali authorities to “do their utmost to remove any obstacle to the free movement of aid and humanitarian relief workers”, and calls on the international donors to increase their aid, humanitarian and reconstruction. The EU, for its part, will step up its emergency aid to the population, according to the Council. Welcoming talks between the transition Federal government, Ethiopia and the committee bringing together the leaders of the Hawiye clan, the Council urges all parties to consolidate the cessation of hostilities with a view to global cease-fire agreements, including the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of the fighters- a process in which the EU is prepared to help if requested to do so. The Council reiterates its appeal to the Federal transition institutions to open political dialogue with all component parts of society. The EU is resolute in its support of the planning and operational capacity of AMISOM (the Mission of the African Union in Somalia), the Council affirms. It calls on the international donors to provide additional financial, logistic and technical support to the mission, and on all African countries which have not yet done so to deploy their forces as soon as possible.
