Brussels, 17/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Monday, Peter Mandelson said that there should be no great expectations regarding the Community trade defence mechanism, which was the subject of a major public consultation up to 31 March, in view of its revision. The commissioner for trade informed the Chinese press agency, Xinhua, “No, I don't expect big change…What adjustments take place will depend on the consultation which is taking place”. On 6 December, the European Commission launched a consultation of stakeholders - consumers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, producers, member states and the European Parliament - in the perspective of overhauling the Union's trade defence instruments, antidumping measures, subsidy busting measures and safeguard measures, set up in 1994 to adapt to the new demands of the globalised economy (EUROPE 9322 and 9387). After 4 months of consultation, the Commission received 541 recommendations that have already been examined by its services. It is expected to publish a White Paper before the summer that analyses the replies provided by stakeholders and which outlines its own positions. (eh)
