MEPs concerned about situation in Ukraine

Brussels, 05/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - In a democracy, political differences are resolved by institutions working in a system of separated powers, not in the street”, MEP Adrian Severin (PES, Romania), the president of the EP delegation from the EU-Ukraine parliamentary cooperation committee, declared in a press release on Tuesday. The expected elections are the last resort, only to be used when the parliament is incapable of exercising its legislative functions and when its members are incapable of fulfilling their mandate, adds Mr Severin. It is up to the Constitutional Court to deal with the issue of the validity of the dissolution of parliament. In expectation of this decision, the president of the EPP, Wilfried Martens, indicates: “we understand that President Yushchenko has felt it necessary to protect the Constitution and we are confident that he examined it carefully before announcing his intention to dissolve the Ukrainian parliament. He hoped that, as was the case during the 2004 elections, the Court, which has the jurisdiction to guarantee a state of law, “would soon come to the correct decision. (ab)
