Brussels, 05/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - On 11 April, the European Parliament will host the 2007 ceremony for the “Energy Globe Awards”, one of the most famous environmental awards in the world.
The awards recognise environmental projects in five categories - earth, fire, water, air and youth - all based on the careful and economical exploitation of resources and sustainable use of energy sources. The aim is to make the best solutions for meeting the energy and climate challenges of today known to a wider audience.
The names of the international winners of the 2007 awards will be made public at 20: 15 in the hemicycle of the Parliament. Hans-Gert Pöttering, the president of the European Parliament, will open the awards gala, which will be hosted by Franz Fischler, the former European commissioner who now chairs the Ecosocial Forum.
Earlier in the day (at 15: 00) a two-day round-table discussion will start on sustainable energy, under the aegis of the European Parliament's committee on industry, research and energy and chaired by Angelika Niebler. Among the distinguished participants will be Dimitri Zegelis, co-author of the Stern report on the economic impact of climate change; Jeremy Rifkin, author of the bestseller “The Hydrogen Economy. When there is no more oil: the next great economic revolution”; actor Martin Sheen; Waris Dirie, United Nations goodwill ambassador; Maneka Gandhi, former Indian Minister for the Environment; and Robin Gibb, musician from the “Bee Gees”, each representing one of the five continents.
