02/04/2007 (Agence Europe) - French Transport Minister Dominique Perben and his Luxembourg counterpart Lucien Lux opened the longest rail 'highway' in Europe on Thursday 29 March, which will link Luxembourg up with Perpignan in June 2007. The new rail link is more than 1000 km long and will be used by lorry drivers who will be able to drive their trucks onto revolving low-level train carriages. The construction work started in December 2005, since when the French state has invested €30 million in building infrastructure and the multimodal platform at the logistics centre in Boulou. Some 300,000 lorries are expected to use the rail ink by 2012-2014 and the French intermodel transport industry aims to have a million HGVs using the link by 2017. (aby)
