EU-US-Russia ministerial meetings on Justice and Home Affairs

Brussels, 29/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - A ministerial-level trilateral EU-US-Russia meeting and an EU-US troika on Justice and Home Affairs will be held in Berlin on 4 and 5 April respectively. The trilateral meeting will focus mainly on four security-related issues, broken down thus: - a discussion on common interests in the field of Home Affairs: an exploratory debate will be followed by discussion on stolen and lost passports; - the fight against terrorism from various perspectives: the current threat, protection of essential infrastructure, the problem of the radicalisation, recruitment and funding of terrorism, and a section on a “global initiative to counter nuclear terrorism”; - combating drug production and trafficking from Afghanistan with a discussion on the current situation and the possibility of improving cooperation in this area; - the integrated management of borders: developing a strategy for managing external borders, information exchange and cooperation. Among those due to take part in the trilateral meeting are, representing the presidency of the EU, the German interior minister Wolfgang Schäuble, US Secretary of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff, Russian interior minister Rashid Nurgaliev, and European Security Commissioner Franco Frattini. German justice minister Brigitte Zypries will join her counterparts in the EU-US troika the following day. This meeting will concentrate on a number of precise points: - visa reciprocity and the reform of the US Visa Waiver Program; - data protection and sharing: common principles on the protection of personal data and an exchange of views on PNR negotiations; - combating terrorism: radicalisation and recruitment and notably the use of the internet by terrorists; - the EU presidency will set out its priorities on criminal justice; - follow-up on the discussions at the trilateral meeting held the previous day.
