Brussels, 29/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the European Parliament's ITRE committee adopted, by a large majority, the report by Eugenijus Maldeikis (UEN, Lithuania) an “Assessing Euratom” after its 50 years of existence, and delivered a positive assessment of the treaty which, the report says, has provided a legal framework for R&D and nuclear cooperation, and, with the establishment of joint security rules, has had a considerable impact on non-proliferation. While it does not want to abandon the Euratom treaty, the ITRE committee, nonetheless, stresses the need for substantial re-adjustment. One action needed immediately would be to submit the EU's nuclear policy to co-decision, so that the European Parliament could have an input. The committee also called for reflection, through a European Forum, on the re-adjustments needed in the fields of nuclear safety, dismantling and waste management. The Maldeikis report will be put to the vote at the plenary session in May. (eh)
