29/03/2007 (Agence Europe) - At the opening of the mini plenary session of the European Parliament on Wednesday, the president Hand-Gert Pöttering , speaking on behalf of the EP, strongly condemned the acts of violence and repression committed by the government of Robert Mugabe against the country's opposition. During the debate on the Berlin Declaration (see EUROPE 9396), German Chancellor and European Council President Angela Merkel shared the Parliament's concerns. “We cannot accept what is happening in Zimbabwe,” she told MEPs. In the event of debates in the UN Security Council failing to lead to concrete measures, the European Union ought to consider European sanctions against this regime, Ms Merkel said. (hb)
